WordPress, a free and Open Source Content Management System, was founded by Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little in May 2003. The name WordPress was coined by Mullenweg’s friend Christine Tremoulet. WordPress is very useful for creating a successful weblog and building an online presence. It is not made for the developers only. Anyone can use WordPress, as it is quite user friendly. WordPress is used by biggest companies and famous celebrities. It is a beneficial and an easy way to sell products online. It does not need any programming at all.

Once the Domain has been chosen, the next step is to set up the blog with WordPress. It would be really helpful if everything is pre-planned. So, the weblog should be planned before setting up the blog. The things that need to be planned are:

  • List of the blog categories to organize the content by groups
  • List of the pages that have to be added
  • Head art of the blog
  • Content strategy and list of topics to start blogging
  • Social media to be integrated into the WordPress weblog

After planning all the important and required things, the next step is to install WordPress on the domain. Installing the WordPress does not take more than 5-10 minutes.

            The step next to the installation is setting up of WordPress to make it work the way one wants it to work. To setup WordPress one needs to go through all the features and customize them according to the need and choice.

  • Appearance

WordPress theme and appearance of the blog could be changed with a few clicks. This includes colors, graphics and text. There are numerous WordPress themes within the official WordPress Theme Directory. The most suitable could be chosen.

  • Media

Picture, images, sound, videos are all included in Media. Media plays an important role in enhancing and giving life to the weblog. The method of inserting Media in WordPress is quite easy. Media could be inserted directly into the posts or could be uploaded and later attached to the posts. This all is managed by Media Manager.

  • Pages

Additional information pages could be added to the weblog according to the need. The pages could be “About”, “Contact” or any other, that are the requirement of the website.

  • Posts

                 Posts are the major part of the weblog. Posts include discussions, writings, compositions and many more. There is no blogging without posts.

  • Widgets

            Little programs like weather, are added through widgets to a side bar.

  • Plug-ins

Plug-in add extra extended functions to the basic functions of the WordPress. Various plug-in could be found from the official directory of WorPress. Some of the important plug-in are as follows.

This plug-in is free and is used make the blog SEO friendly.

This WordPress plug-in compresses the images on the blog.

  • W3 total Cache plug-in

This cache plug-in is to be used alone. It is recommended that none other cache plug-in should be used along with it. This plug-in is important as it makes the blog load faster.

  • WordPress social media plug-in

 This plug-in helps to get more social media sharing.

  1. Publishing the blog online:

Once the WordPress is set up completely, the blog is ready to be published online. A few things need to reviewed.

  • The pages should be complete. Incomplete pages must not be published.
  • Unnecessary plug-ins should not be installed. Remove any unnecessary plug-ins.
  • After publishing the blog online, it must be kept up-to-date.

WordPress is highly customizable and meets the demands of many users. It does not cost much and hence, is very economical. It is really easy to be maintained.
